Understanding MacArthur
|
MacArthur was an effort to replicate William Shakespeare's Macbeth within 21st century. This storyline takes inspiration from the days after Chaminade's Student Council elections. Though the bullying that occurs in the film is not true, some of the facts are true. Vincent Pham's (the director of MacArthur) poster, "We are a Phamily," was actually his Student Council campaign slogan. Also, the fact the Vincent Pham losing the election is somewhat true, as he will not be returning on Student Council for the 2018-2019 on his old post as vice-president. However, such events has inspired the birth of MacArthur.
The film features MacArthur (Carlos Luis) as modern day Macbeth. Vincent Pham appears very briefly in the opening scene of a real Student Council Office at Chaminade College School. He is representative of Duncan. Tyler Nguyen, MacArthur's friend is a modern day version of Lady Macbeth. He advises MacArthur to take down Vincent Pham and to "kill" Vincent Pham by destroying his reputation. The voices announcing the prophecy of MacArthur's presidency is representative of the witches. Macduff is represented by the mention of Ethan Williams, who in real life, is Chaminade Student Council's president. In an aside, MacArthur wishes to take down Ethan Williams, just as Macbeth had intentions to kill Macduff. Unfortunately, MacArthur is exposed by Ethan Williams as MacArthur is questioned by the principal about his cyberbullying. In the end, like Macbeth, MacArthur is "kicked" off the throne as MacArthur is expelled from Chaminade College School.
In an effort to avoid violence, the director has chosen not to depict any murders.
